To Grace, at 18 months old

Dear Grace,

I decided to write you a letter today, so you can look back and read it one day when you are older. This week I took you to your 18 month doctor's appointment. You were in the 50% percentile for weight and 75th for height. As is usual, with my girls: tall and skinny! You didn't get this lucky trait from your Mama!

I also thought I'd tell you a little about yourself at 18 months. You are the delight of our lives! At every stage of your development I mourn your growth more than a little. Although I'm so excited to watch you grow up and change, I also really hate to see the little baby disappear more and more each day. You were the best baby. You were pleasant and sweet and always ready with a smile and a laugh for everyone.

Now that you are a toddler, you are even more fun! You are totally entertaining. Daddy and I miss you when we are away from you for even a few hours. You smile and laugh easily and say "Hi" to everyone, including total strangers. You win friends easily! You love to entertain people and work hard for praise and laughs from those you love. You dance to all music, including this hilarious booty shake. You also lip sync to songs. If a song comes on, you close your eyes, and move your mouth like you are singing the most serious ballad in the world.

In the last couple of weeks, you have tripled or quadrupled your vocabulary. There isn't a word you won't try to say. Much to our chagrin, you call both Daddy and I (and anyone else you know and love) Mommy and Daddy indiscriminately. You call your sister, i-bell. You can also repeat books that we read you every night, your favorite is probably Moo, Baa, La la la, where you an say every sound the animals say. You also love Five Little Monkey's jumped on the Bed. You love saying "No No No' When the doctor says "No more monkey's jumping on the bed!"

These days you are starting to get a little independent. If you don't get your way, you have been known to throw yourself on the ground, in a full fledged temper tantrum. You go at this whole heartedly for about 15 seconds, before you stop, get up, smile, and resume whatever you were doing. So funny!

These words don't adequately describe how amazing and wonderful you are. How much pleasure we get from being your parents, and how we love to watch you grow and change. But I hope it gives you an idea of who you were.

We love you with our whole hearts,

Mommy and Daddy

You are so blessed with both of your girls. I'm sure that Grace will appreciate the letter when she is older. I love this little girl so much.

There is such a special calling to bringing up children. I don't think we get much closer to the heart of God until we become parents. You and Conrad have blessed my live so much by just being the children you are and giving me the wonderful loves of my life---my Grace Christine (named after me, of course) and Isabelle.
